In its heyday the National Cattle Congress in Waterloo, Iowa, was the biggest and best National Show in the nation. All the best cows and all the right people were there. The 100th Anniversary show is being held in a few weeks. As part of the celebration, models of each breed's most notable Waterloo Champions are being sold. Afton's Golden Marie will represent the Guernsey breed. Norm Nabholz of Iowa has released a new book chronicling the show's golden years.

The Guernsey Class Leaders list has been updated. This is a listing of the top 10 lactation records for milk, fat and protein in each age group from yearling to cows over 10 years of age.

The National Dairy Shrine's Summer newsletter is now available online. It reports on those industry luminaries and young people that will be honored by the National Dair Shrine at World Dairy Expo this fall. Merton Sowerby will be named a National Dairy Shrine Pioneer and AGYA Members Michelle Funk, Lydia Hardie and Sandra Kirchner will receive scholarships.

The Guernsey breed, in cooperation with USDA and other groups worldwide, is moving forward with plans to develop genomic evaluations. DNA has been extracted from semen of about 75 old sires already. However, many more are required. Please review this listing and contact Seth Johnson at the AGA office if you can supply one unit of semen on any of the sires on THIS LIST.

Berneta Gable, New Enterprise, Pa., has been named the second Robert “Whitey” McKown Master Breeder Award winner, which will be presented at the 44th World Dairy Expo. The winner of the McKown Master Breeder Award is chosen by the members of the Klussendorf Association. The award honors a well-managed breeder herd who is successful showing and judging and emphasizes all qualities of the Klussendorf Award, including ability, character, endeavor, and sportsmanship. Berneta Gable and her Snider Homestead Farm fit every criteria of the McKown Master Breeder Award. Gable, along with her husband, Brad, son Aaron and wife Amy, manages Snider Homestead Farm. The NGS-Sacramento was held on July 29 in Sacramento, California. Faria Farms of Escalon, California, took home most of the hardware including Junior Champion and Reserve with a pair of maternal sisters from their popular bull mother Lang Haven Tiller Nirvana. Full Results can be found HERE.

The AGA Approved Judges List was updated at the recent National Convention. The AGA Show Committee and AGA Board review this list at their meetings in June and over the winter. If the judge of your state or regional show does not appear on this list, they will not receive a 2010 All-American ballot. Please contact AGA if you would like to suggest a judge for inclusion on the list or if you would like to be considered yourself.

The Board of Directors of the American Guernsey Association took the following action at the recent meetings in June:
- AGA staff will attempt to rent the current owned building. If successful, AGA and PP staff and property will be moved to a smaller location in central Ohio.
- November will be designated as the 100th Anniversary Issue of the Guernsey Breeders’ Journal
- Registration Fees will be raised by $2.00 effective September 1, 2010
- Effective in 2011, TPE herds will only receive registration discounts on calves registered under 6 months of age
- When scoring cows with deformed front legs, 5 points will be deducted from the Feet & Legs score as well as the Final Score.
- Members ordering or requiring a DNA parentage testing kit will be invoiced when it is sent out rather than when the work is completed.
- Bull Syndicate members will be given the opportunity to donate their proceeds from royalties to AGA.
- AGA Sales Code was changed to require sellers to fully stand behind the accuracy of the parentage of animals they sell.
- Blaine Crosser was appointed as a Trustee of The Guernsey Foundation.
- A National Guernsey Futurity Committee was formed to work to reinvigorate the Fight-Bac National Guernsey Gold Futurity.

The World Guernsey Conference was held in Guelph, Ontario, last week. The conference tackled such topics as genomic selection, widening the Guernsey genetic base, international cooperation in young sire use and A2 milk. Pictures from the event can be found HERE.

The National Convention in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, was held June16-21. It was the largest convention held in quite some time with over 550 attendees, a count that includes 175 Junior Members. The Youth Fun Auction raised over $8,000 for Junior programs with a print donated by Hoard's Dairyman bringing $2100. Some Highlights:

Another large and appreciative crowd gathered in West Salem, Wisconsin, for the Upper MidWest Spring Sale. 71 Registered Guernseys sold. The high seller was a springing Skipper daughter from 6 VG or EX dams for $3,700. The overall sale included a dispersal of a small herd and many young potential project calves. The females averaged $1,444.

The Blue Halter Calf Sale averaged $2,176 on 40 live lots on April 17 in Bedford, PA. A huge crowd gathered from all over the country and proved that quality Guernsey genetics are still very much in demand. More details HERE.

The New York Spring Carousel was a success last week in Syracuse, New York. The Guernsey sale averaged just over $1,000 with a December '09 Yogi calf selling for $2,200 to top the sale. She was consigned by Nathan Pieper of Walton, New York, the second year that he has sent the sale topper to this sale. Millborne Tiller Blair, EX-91, was named Grand Champion of the show for Morey Miller of Granby, CT. She is a granddaughter of Laeschland Perfect Bliss, EX-94. Sniders Dollar Adeline, EX-93, exhibited by Snider Homestead of New Enterprise, PA, was Reserve Grand Champion. She is a granddaughter of Cedar Fringed Altann, EX-95. Friendship A Mistic, the winning Summer Yearling, was named Junior Champion. She is owned by Dick & Judy Whalen of Millbrook, NY, and is an Adacka great-granddaughter of Marshdene Magic Mary, EX-94. Reserve Junior Champion honors went to Sniders Nomar Petunia-Tw.

24 Registered Guernseys sold in the 2010 Kentucky National Sale on April 1. The sale average of $1,299 represents a $200 improvement over the 2009 sale. The top seller was a June 2009 Moziers Enhancer Vigilant-ET daughter from a VG-88 Sonic with over 1,100F. She sold for $3,100 to John Fudge of Gamaliel, Kentucky. Second high in the sale was a September 2009 calf from a VG-85 Magic dam. The calf has sisters scored VG-88 and VG-89. She sold for $3,000 to Connor Parker of Colfax, Iowa, and was consigned by Phillip Perkins of Hardyville, Kentucky. More details HERE.
