Iowa Guernsey Breeders’ Association

Annual Meeting

Saturday March 1, 2008

St. John’s Lutheran ChurchStorm Lake, IA

The annual meeting of the Iowa Guernsey Breeders’ Association was held Saturday March 1, 2008 at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Storm Lake, IA.  There were 16 people in attendance.  An invocation before the noon meal was given by Vernon Winterhof.  A delicious pork loin meal was served by Host District 5.

The business meeting was called to order at 1 PM by President Craig Church.  Dave Medick, District 5 Representative gave the welcome on behalf of District 5 with shared sentiments on are-we-ever-going-to-see-the-arrival of Spring.?  It’s time for winter to go!

Secretary Naomi Church read the minutes of the 2007 annual meeting.  They were approved as read.

Treasurer Gloria DeGroote stated the current balance on hand in the checking account is $7054.04.  The CD’s total $18797.50 and the Junior account balance is $453.71.

The treasurer’s report was approved as read.

National Director (District 5) Jillian Walther sent her update for the membership as she was unable to be in attendance.  She stated 2007 showed an increase in registrations.  As of Jan. 1, 2008 registration fees have gone up to offset climbing input costs.  The current fees are as follows for a Guernsey calf age 0-6mos.: $15 for TPE member, $20 for a member and $26 for non-member.  The 2008 National Convention will be June 26-30 in Wisconsin.  Award applications are available on the AGA website and deadline for applications is March 31, 2008.  District 5 will be featured in the June Guernsey Journal, so this is a great opportunity to advertise.  Advertising deadline is May 10th, contact Lynette Wright to get an ad created.

John Arnold gave the PDCA report.  They have yet to have a meeting due to inclement weather.  He reported there will be no Iowa State Fair premium books mailed out.  They are available online.  Dry cow classes for Guernseys may once again be put into the show, as the State Fair did not put the money from them into the group classes like they should have.  Mark Erdman will be the Guernsey Open Show judge.

In old business, Jan Winke gave a National Convention Wrap-up.  It’s over and went well.  There were over 350 people in attendance and we got a lot of positive comments.  Gladie Church reported on the pottery.  We have pottery pieces leftover and are selling them for $25/ piece.  Due to a glaze problem the potter still owes us 39 pieces or $780 worth of merchandise.  Pictures of the different pieces the potter makes and a price list were passed around.  Contact Gladie Church to order.  Pottery checks are to be made out to Iowa National Guernsey Convention and sent to Brenda Medick until May 28th.  Convention Finance Chair Brenda Medick passed around the finance sheet.  Total income was $70909.70, expenses totaling $56558.28, net income of $14351.42.  All bills have been paid.  Subtracting the initial seed money from the State in the amount of $4500 (they loaned $5500, but have received $1000) to date our profit from convention is $9851.42.  The convention checking account balance is $2351.42.  Per Executive Board request $12000 was recently sent to Gloria to be placed into a CD.  The account will close May 28 and all funds will then be sent to Gloria.

Chad Winke gave a brief report of the sale facilities – 250 people were served at the sale luncheon.  Chris & Suzanne Holcomb served their Brown Cow Ice Cream.

In new business, the board has discussed taking over the planning of the State meeting with a rotation between 2-3 sites.  The districts could possibly take turns planning/hosting a state picnic.  President Church reiterated the importance of a state picnic and that it would be nice to make that an annual priority again.  To nominate the Pioneer Breeder each district representative could submit a name and the board would decide.

The board also discussed having a CFP award instead of the separate awards of High Cow Milk, High Cow Fat and High Cow Protein.  It was discussed having a CFP award for 1st lactation, 2nd lactation, and 3rd & greater lactation and keeping the High Cow Milk.

Nothing has been decided, districts need to discuss this.  It will be decided at the next board meeting.

In other business, an at-large position held by Randy Knapp was up for election.  Randy and Naomi were nominated.  Ballots were cast and Naomi Church will serve a 3 year term.  It was announced that Larry Moen will serve the remainder of District 1 Rep. Chad Winke’s term of one year.  District 3 and District 4 are yet to have their elections.

Iowa Guernsey Princess Renae Hinkeldey spoke on her reign.  She has represented us well and will continue to represent us this year as a new candidate was not found.  Since she did not run for Iowa Dairy Princess last year, she is eligible to run this year.  Renae will compete in the National Guernsey Queen contest as well.

A DVD presentation of the new ISU Dairy Farm was played with Dr. Leo Timms giving the color commentary.  He was unable to be there in person.
