Annual Meeting Minutes

IOWA GUERNSEY BREEDERS’ ASSOCIATION

The Iowa Guernsey Breeders’ Association held its annual meeting on March 28, 2009 at the Pizza Ranch in Manchester, Iowa.  Gloria DeGroote gave the invocation and we enjoyed the buffet.

President John Arnold called the meeting to order and welcomed everyone.  Tracey Gruhn was thanked for setting up the annual meeting.

The secretary’s report from the 2008 annual meeting was approved as read.

The treasurer’s report was handed out and was approved as read.  There is a total of $40276 between savings and CDs.

John gave a brief description of what the IGBA supports and promotes.  As follows:  National Convention Youth Banquet tickets to youth participating in Quiz Bowl at the National Convention, $500 to the breeder that does Blue Ribbon Row at the Iowa State Fair, Items at the State Fair such as; open show trophy, support of the judging contest, Junior awards, and each Junior exhibitor at the Iowa State Fair will receive something for participating (item has yet to be decided); support ribbons at World Dairy Expo Junior show; IGBA also pays a portion of the Iowa Junior Dairy Coalition attendance fee to Iowa Guernsey Juniors and it sponsors the CFP awards given at the annual meeting.

Youth Director Karen Laabs reported on junior activities.  Iowa Juniors won the Quiz Bowl at 2008 National Convention.  She encouraged youth to participate in the many youth activities at the National Convention.  Iowa could possibly take a team to the 2009 National Convention in Texas July 8-13.

John Arnold gave the PDCA report.  Premiums will be raised in 1-10 place; there will be no dry cow classes, and Neil Jensen has agreed to be the open show judge.

Randy Knapp gave the Expo report.  There will be a Fall yearling in-milk class and Fowler Branstetter will serve as judge.

The AGA report was given by Glenda Eilers who read a report sent by AGA Director Jillian Walther.  There will be no increase in rates this year, strong demand for registered Guernseys continues, and Purebred Publishing is fully staffed.

In business, an essay contest was discussed in lieu of a share-a-heifer program.  The IGBA would purchase a calf for the contest winner.  It would be open to youth within Iowa.  There was discussion and general consensus in favor of this.  Don Eilers moved to have the board proceed to do the legwork; Dan Sivesind second, motion passes.

In new business, state dues were discussed.  Ambrose Pins moved to not have dues, but still send in the membership cards.  Don Eilers second, motion passes.

In other business, an at-large board position was up for election.  Dave moved to nominate John Arnold.  Nominations were ceased and a unanimous ballot was cast.  John will serve a new 3 year term.

The Eilers’ Family was thanked for doing Blue Ribbon Row.  They have done it for 11 years.  Don reported that we now have to sign a contract with the Iowa State Fair and if we do not have a representative for BRR the association will be fined.  He also announced if anyone has Guernseys for sale give Don the information to post as he has many inquiries while at State Fair.

President Arnold introduced our princess candidate, Leeta Sivesind.  She was crowned the 2009 Iowa Guernsey Princess.  She is looking forward to representing Iowa Guernsey Breeders.
