2008 Blue Halter Sale Saturday, April 19 Bedford, Pennsylvania 12:00 noon The 2008 edition of the Blue Halter Calf Sale shattered the record for average and sale gross in this series when 47 animals combined for a $3,308 average. A large crowd from all over the east was bolstered by considerable phone interest as several of the consignments were top-notch. Attracting extreme pre-sale publicity after being named Junior Champion at the New York Spring Show the week before the sale was the 2007 Reserve All-American Spring Calf, Flemingdale Sunrise Vanity. After a spirited bidding duel, Daniel St. Pierre of Berwick, Maine, placed the final bid of $13,300. John and Bonnie Ayars and Dr. Kenny Manion of Ohio and Kentucky were the contenders. Vanity is a daughter of Ripley Farms RC Sunrise and her dam was nominated Jr. All-American as a calf. She was consigned by her breeder, AGA Junior Member Chris Fleming of New York. The unique opportunity to select any heifer at Snider Homestead Farm in New Enterprise, Pennsylvania, attracted plenty of interest. The partnership of Deb Lakey and Brandon Grewe of Wisconsin placed the final bid of $11,000. Contenders were Frank Faria and Morey Miller of California and Connecticut. The buyer has 30 days to select one of the many deep-pedigreed heifers from the farm. Among the those considered in contention are a Tiller from the Chupps Farm Dazzle Family, a calf from four Excellent dams going back to Altann and a big, fancy Fall Yearling from the EX-92 All-American nominee Goldust Sydney, not to mention the possibility of selecting a Goldust bred heifer from Altann herself. Taking advantage of the newly opened Canadian border, Maplehurst Farm of Lynden, Ontario, consigned the next two high sellers. Erica Showalter of Whispering Pines Farm in Cambridge, Ohio, placed the final bid of $7,900 on a Guernsey Gold Contest Heifer. She is a January 2007 Skipper from a VG-87 Warden and is the #1 PA LPI Index heifer in Canada. A maternal sister to the heifer is the well-known Maplehurst Golden Bess, who was Canadian National Champion twice. The Partnership of Frank Faria and Morey Miller were succesful in purchasing an August '07 Royalty heifer from a VG-87 Lewis daughter. The 4th Dam is the world-famous EX-94 Biddy cow, whose daughter Bliss was the #1 CPI cow and a Madison Champion. The heifer ranks as the #21 PA LPI Index heifer in Canada. The sale was managed by the Pennsylvania Guernsey Breeders' Association with Jim Trotter taking care of the details. Chris Reichart headed up a capable fitting crew. Mike Weimer called the sale with Dave Smith making the announcements. Dave Trotter, Jim Trotter and Blaine Crosser took bids. John and Patti McMurray did their usual excellent job clerking the sale.
